Kristen Michal

Minister of Climate

Kristen Michal was born on July 12, 1975, in Tallinn. He is in a common-law marriage and has three sons. He has been a member of the Estonian Reform Party since 1996 and is currently a member of its board.

His employment history includes:

  • Member of the 13th and 14th Riigikogu from 2016 to 2021.

  • Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure from 2015 to 2016.

  • Member of the 12th Riigikogu from 2012 to 2015.

  • Minister of Justice from 2011 to 2012.

  • Member of the 10th and 11th Riigikogu from 2004 to 2007.

  • Secretary General of the Estonian Reform Party from 2003 to 2011.

  • Elder of the Kesklinn district in Tallinn in 2002.

  • Advisor to the Prime Minister in 2002.

  • Advisor to the Minister of Regional Affairs and head of the minister's office from 2001 to 2002.

  • Member of the Tallinn City Council since 1999.

In terms of education, he graduated from I Studium in 1994 with a degree in economics, studied administrative management at Tallinn University from 1994 to 1999, graduated from University Nord in 2009 with a degree in law, and studied law at the master's level at Tallinn University from 2010 to 2014. His native language is Estonian, and he also speaks English, Finnish, German, and Russian.

Additionally, he is a reserve officer in the Defence Forces and has interests in literature, sports, and fishing.
